Fair Dealing and Copyright in Canada

Four of the Eight Fair Dealing Purposes

1. Research-

Research is the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach conclusions. You may copy a article from each issue of a article for the purpose of private study or research. If you are planning on publishing your research, you are not allowed to include a copy of the article that you got the information with your publication. So you are researching for an article that you have decided to undertake, you find this site that gives you everything you need for your research article. You finally finish and decide to publish your work, the only thing you can't do is cite your source from where you got the information.

2. Education-

Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquiring of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. If an article is placed in class handout you can copy up to a full article for the purpose of education. So if a teacher wanted to pass out an article to his/hers class for an example of the work they wanted to do in class, they are allowed to copy. However, if the work is being distributed to an open audience or in a way that is not well defined such as commercial or advertisement is restricted.

3. Review-

The analysis and judgment of a authors work. You can copy an entire article as part of a research process and include portions within your work. As part of your critique, review, or news report, you must mention the source and, if provided, list the authors or creators. So if you were to publish work and critique other sites work in your own you have to list the source and the authors or creators if given.

4. Other (public distribution, commercial use, profit, entertainment)-

You are not allowed to use the copyright-protected work if it is not for the purpose of education, research, private study, satire, parody, criticism, review, or news reporting; OR Intended to be used for commercial activity, profit, entertainment, or public distribution. So if you would like to use music for non-educational purposes, for example, as background music,  or at a school event, licences should generally be obtained from the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada.

Work Assignments: Reflecting and Planning

Podcasting: Eagle Talk

Ciara (my partner) and I have been assigned to set up a podcast for our school. We had named this podcast Eagle Talk (reasoning for "eagle" is because its our school mascot), through the semester of podcasting non-stop we have in my opinion mastered the basics on podcasting. Although I can't see myself becoming a professional podcaster or whatever there actually called, I know now that it takes a lot more to just sit down and play around with sounds and edits. I have learned that you need a soft voice and lots of enthusiasm or it gets a little boring. Knowing what I know now about podcasting I know to be more prepared with information and with my scripts and everything, now that I'm sure I did my best podcasting with my partner, It's time to part ways with Eagle Talk and I can only hope that next years podcasters will learn from there experiences as well.

PS, Mr. Carter I don't know if I did this assignment right!

Hard News VS. Soft News

Hard News:

This is hard news because it involves politics, which people all around no matter what age is involved in. People will read news like this to know whats going in America even though there not from there. Everyone is involved in this particular news because a person like Trump being voted President of the United States is a big deal. Therefore this is a wide spread news story, reaching many of people out there with internet to read.

Soft News:

This news about the famous Canadian singer Justin Bieber is really soft news because its only reaching a younger generation because his fan base is mostly younger people. However it does bring a lot of soccer fan groups to the reading too, considering he's with the Barcelona team.

Blurred Lines:

This news article is classified as blurred lines because it about animals, and everybody loves animals, however also its funny and who doesn't love a good laugh. Its not hard news because its not really important or serious news and its not soft news because lots more people would click on this news article than a Justin Bieber article.

What Is Newsworthy?

Justin Bieber Tells Fans to Stop Screaming, Walks Off Stage

 Timing- 3/4

This article was uploaded a day after this specific event took place. I only took off one mark and gave them a 3 because of this general post they could have had it uploaded the day of; giving all the information that was plastered all over social media.

Significance- 3/4

This article is somewhat significant in celebrity news, however there are more important storys to talk about than just that a very popular singer that walks out of one of there concerts. I gave them this mark because after the fact Justin had later come back to perform the rest of the concert.

Proximity- 3/4

This proximity of this article is in Manchester England, however this article does not take place in Canada, he is a well known Canadian singer song writer.

Prominence- 4/4

This article is about Justin Bieber, he is a very well known Canadian singer with an enormous fan base which is why this article is of importance.

Human Interest- 2/4

I gave this mark of 50 50 because this article is appealing to younger audiences and people who feel strongly about music, also this article is a big hit in social media as well. However there are people that do not really care for music or just Justin Bieber in general so they are the other half of the 50 50.

Against tradition, Barack Obama warns he wont remain silent after he leaves the Oval Office in January

Timing- 4/4

This articles mark was awesome because of the timing although it was posted a day after the event took place, I gave them a good mark based on all the information this article had provided for only a day after.

Significance- 4/4

This article has a significance in news because it involves the presidency now. Obama warns he will not remain silent meaning he is going to be involved as he can be with the presidency turned over to Trump.

Proximity- 3/4

Although this article is about the presidency of the United States (US); Canada is very involved in the elections; Canadians are always following US politics meaning it hits our proximity very well.

Prominence- 3/4

The importance of this article is to ensure people who is skeptical about Trumps overtake of the presidency, Obama makes sure to tell people just because he is leaving doesn't mean he will not be involved in the politics.

Human Interest- 3/4

This appeals to anyone who likes to be involved, watch, or even just observe politics. However lets face it if you don't do any of these things then you will probably hear people talking about it around or within a group of people involved.

A last minute protest took place in Houston Texas Baytown area. The crowed protested to keep a particular site that people in the area love to visit. The company planning to build on this site is GNB (Gorilla Note Bank) a national bank that has been building nationally all year. The people had finally had enough. The bank had made a decision on the 23rd of October to forgo this project.

GNB has been the victim of these violet protest over the past few years, however they've been expanding there company by implanting new building's all year round, which explains why people are now furthering there emotions about the GNB company.
The reasons for GNB building recently was because they were only in certain areas and wanted to expand there company to make it more globally.
The protest took place on the 25th of October, there were around 2000 people at the protest and managed to stop the building from being built that week. However the protest did not stop them from building altogether, GNB had later the next week started to build again.
